Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has lauded the gallantry and sacrifice of Nigerian Air Force personnel serving in the Northeast, describing their role in the fight against insurgency as central to the state’s gradual return to peace.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Internal Security Aminu Chamalwa, at an Eid-el-Kabir Luncheon organised by the Nigerian Air Force for personnel of the 105 Composite Group in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum praised the troops for their unyielding dedication and selflessness in the face of daunting security challenges.
“While many Nigerians are with their families during this sacred season, you remain on the frontlines, defending the nation. Your courage and patriotism are the bedrock upon which Borno is rebuilding lives, communities, and hope,” Zulum said.
The governor acknowledged the progress made in stabilizing previously volatile communities and facilitating the return of internally displaced persons, attributing these gains to the steadfast efforts of the military. He warned, however, that recent signs of insurgent activity around the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin demand renewed vigilance and unity among security agencies.
Zulum reiterated the state government’s firm support for the Armed Forces, pledging continued investments in civil-military cooperation, infrastructure, and welfare for personnel and their families.
“We deeply appreciate your sacrifices. May Almighty Allah continue to protect and guide you as you uphold your constitutional duties with distinction,” he said.
The event brought together senior military officials, frontline personnel, and community leaders to celebrate the festival and reinforce unity.
In his goodwill message, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, represented by Air Vice Marshal Patrick Owecho Obeya, commended NAF troops for their resilience, noting that their sacrifices have ensured the security of millions. He called on personnel to draw inspiration from the Eid’s values of sacrifice, obedience, and faith, which mirror the core principles of military service.
Highlighting recent air-ground joint operations in Damboa, Marte, Izge, and Bitta, the CAS affirmed the NAF’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace. “Our message to the enemies of peace is clear: we will find you, dismantle your networks, and restore calm across Nigeria,” he said.
Also speaking, Air Commodore Umar Idris, Air Component Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, praised the dedication of air personnel and lauded Governor Zulum’s unwavering support for the armed forces. He credited recent operational successes to improved coordination, advanced platforms like the A-29 Super Tucano and CH-4 UAVs, and strong civil-military cooperation.
“Our intensified aerial campaigns continue to disrupt terrorist logistics and command structures, allowing displaced families to return home,” he said.
He also paid tribute to fallen heroes and praised the support of local communities, traditional leaders, and civilian collaborators for their roles in intelligence gathering and peacebuilding.
The CAS also disclosed that the NAF has completed over 295 infrastructure projects out of more than 470 across Nigeria, ranging from residential accommodations and hospitals to worship and sporting facilities. The service has also begun distribution of new uniforms to boost morale.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Governor Zulum for their sustained support to the Nigerian Air Force.
“As we mark this sacred season, let us recommit ourselves to national unity, discipline, and peace,” the Air Chief said.
