Electricity workers in Katsina State, under the banner of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of pension entitlements that have accumulated for more than eight years.
The strike, which officially kicked off on Wednesday, involves staff of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), which manages power distribution across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states.
Northwest Zonal Coordinator of the union, Comrade Sani Muhammad Ahmad, told Katsina Times that the Katsina branch office of KEDCO along Kano Road was sealed off by the union following prolonged efforts to get the issue resolved amicably.
“Our members are being shortchanged — over 100 months of pension deductions remain unpaid. This indefinite strike is the last resort after exhausting all dialogue options,” he said while locking up the premises.
He accused KEDCO of deliberately sitting on workers’ pension funds, stressing that the company is financially capable of settling the arrears but has failed to act.
Comrade Sani reaffirmed the union’s resolve to continue the industrial action until the outstanding pensions are cleared. He also expressed regret over the likely disruptions in electricity supply but emphasized that the action is necessary for justice.
“We’re not just workers; we’re parents and breadwinners too. All we’re asking for is what we’ve rightfully earned,” he said, calling on the public to bear with them and lend their support during the struggle.
