The Yobe State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, with key party members alleging significant irregularities in recent congresses In the party.
In a press briefing held in Damaturu on Friday, Barrister Ahmed Warizi, the Legal Advisor of the PDP Yobe State Chapter, alongside local government chairmen and state working committee members, expressed their “deepest sorrow” and “unhappiness” over the handling of the party’s internal elections.
Barister Warizi emphasized the importance of adhering to the PDP’s constitution, stating, “The PDP has its own constitution, and also a guideline.”
According to him the party constitution has stated in the earliest chapter, it has supremacy over all members of the party and all activities.”
He stressed that the constitution mandates inclusive participation of all card-carrying members at every level of the party.
The crux of the complaint centered on the alleged lack of transparency and inclusivity in the congresses held across the 17 local government areas of Yobe State.
Barister Warizi pointedly stated, “Unfortunately, as I have stated earlier, we here in Yobe State, all eyes are on us,” referencing the fact that the acting national chairman of the PDP hails from Yobe. He argued that the state should be setting a “role model” example for other chapters.
Abdullahi Shuaibu, the PDP Chairman of Potiskum local government and ALGON chairman of the 17 LGAs of the party, further elaborated on the grievances.
He asserted, “The word American government adopted in the state on May 8 and 13, 2025 without our knowledge we are not contacted we are bonafide and card carrying members of the party.
So we deserve to be carried along in all the party’s affairs especially issue of Congress.” Shuaibu expressed disappointment that despite their support for the acting national chairman, they felt marginalized.
He urged the national secretariat to “investigate the matter here in Yobe and ensure all irregularities at the Congresses” are rectified.
The timing of these allegations is particularly sensitive, with the 2027 general elections looming.
Warizi highlighted the significance of unity and adherence to due process, warning that the upcoming elections would be “one of the most hardest” Nigerians will face.
In response to the allegations, the outgoing party chairman, Amb Umar El-gash, stated that notification for the Congress was communicated to all members through the respective platforms of the party, as they usually do. He also acknowledged the constitutional right of aggrieved members to appeal through the appropriate channels within the party.
The unfolding situation has cast a shadow over the PDP’s unity in Yobe State, raising concerns about its preparedness for the upcoming elections.
The national secretariat’s response to these allegations will be closely watched, as it could have significant implications for the party’s standing in the region respectively.
