A swift police response in the early hours of Friday led to the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect, Ekwere Obiowo Ernest, in connection with an attempted pipeline vandalization in Ikot Oboron Enyin Village, Akwa Ibom State.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command disclosed that the suspect, a native of Ukam Village in the Edemeya Clan, was caught red-handed with a cache of tools typically used in pipeline tampering. Among the items recovered were a filing machine, welding electrodes, large bolts and nuts, spanners, a Fireman generator, and a flask of fufu – believed to be his intended meal at the crime scene.
Police operatives stormed the area around 5:05 AM after receiving a distress call from a Marine Police officer. Other gang members reportedly escaped upon seeing law enforcement.
The suspect is currently in custody, assisting with further investigations.
According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John, the command remains committed to clamping down on all forms of economic sabotage in the state.
