In a bold move to reclaim Borno’s capital from the grip of rising social vices, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday inaugurated a powerful committee tasked with stamping out drug abuse, youth restiveness, gangsterism, and political thuggery.

The governor, visibly alarmed by the surge in violent crimes across Maiduguri, did not mince words. “It’s getting out of hand. Thuggery, theft, prostitution, and even killings—right behind UMTH—have now become the norm. This is no longer acceptable,” he declared.

Zulum warned that if left unchecked, these anti-social behaviours could spiral into a full-blown security crisis, undermining hard-won gains in the fight against insurgency.

The new committee, made up of traditional leaders, military officers, police officials, and legal experts, is expected to spearhead aggressive public sensitization and bring offenders to justice.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Hauwa Abubakar, who chairs the committee, pledged full commitment to the governor’s charge. “We will deliver,” she assured.

With Zulum’s zero-tolerance stance now in motion, Maiduguri may be on the path to reclaiming its streets from lawlessness.
