Amid Water Scarcity, Kano Blows N247 Million on Refreshments, Skimps on Water Projects in Early 2025

Katsina state government

Kano State, grappling with a worsening water crisis, has come under fire after it emerged that the government spent a staggering N247 million on refreshments and honorariums in the first quarter of 2025 — far outpacing its investments in critical water infrastructure.

According to official expenditure reports, allocations for water supply projects lagged significantly behind the lavish spending on government entertainment and protocol. The revelation has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom endure daily struggles to access clean drinking water.

“We queue for hours at broken boreholes while the government throws parties,” lamented Musa Abdullahi, a resident of Gwale. Civic groups are now demanding accountability, warning that misplaced priorities could worsen public health crises as temperatures soar across the state.

Despite repeated promises to tackle water shortages, critics argue the state’s spending patterns show a troubling disconnect from the realities facing ordinary citizens. As frustrations boil over, all eyes are on Kano’s leadership to explain how refreshments took precedence over life-sustaining infrastructure.
