At least 12 brave soldiers of the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces FDS have fallen in a fierce battle against terrorists following a deadly ambush near Sakoira in the Tillabéri Region.
Intelligence sources revealed that the soldiers were attacked on Friday, April 25, about 10 kilometres north of Sakoira, during a security operation. Insurgents, cleverly disguised among civilians, launched a surprise assault on the troops.
Despite the ambush, the soldiers fought valiantly, holding their ground until aerial and ground reinforcements arrived, forcing the terrorists to flee northwards. An intensive pursuit operation was immediately launched, with air and ground assets deployed to hunt down the attackers.
During mop-up operations, two suspects believed to be involved in the ambush were captured while hiding in elevated terrain. They are now in custody for further investigation into their possible ties to wider terrorist networks.
This latest attack underscores the persistent threat gripping Tillabéri, a hotspot of jihadist violence in the Sahel, and highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect the region.
