Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has flagged off the construction of a 9-span giant flyover and the dualisation of the Tashan Kano highway with an additional bridge. The project is aimed at significantly easing traffic congestion within Maiduguri city and is part of the broader urban expansion and modernization effort of the Borno State capital.
Speaking at the groundbreaking event, Governor Zulum urged the contractors to ensure timely completion of the project, which is a key part of his administration’s urban renewal programme.
Governor Zulum further disclosed that the project is valued at approximately N16 billion, and 15 percent of the contract sum has already been paid. He affirmed that there would be no room for delays.
“We have set aside N8 billion for interim payments, and there will be no cost variation. I urge the contractors to maintain high standards and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
“This is the fourth major bridge we are constructing to transform Maiduguri into a modern city, to the glory of God and the benefit of humanity,” Zulum added.
While launching the construction of the road. “this morning, we are here to officially launch the dualisation of the 7.1-kilometer road from Borno Express to Molai and to construct an additional bridge downstream to enhance the smooth flow of vehicular traffic, this project will be completed within eight months,” Zulum said.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Mustapha Gubio, assured the governor that the road dualisation would be completed within eight months, while the flyover is expected to be completed in four months.
Gubio explained that the new flyover is structurally different from previously constructed ones in Maiduguri. “This is a 9-span bridge, 600 meters in total length, comprising 16 piers, with ramps of 210 meters on each side. It begins near the entrance of the Specialist Hospital and terminates close to the Ngarannam bridge near BRTV,” he said.
He emphasized that the project site requires minimal compensation, noting that all soil and structural tests have been successfully conducted. The contract has been awarded to EECN General Limited.
