In a landmark move to combat the scourge of maternal and infant deaths, the Katsina State Government has rolled out an intensive health training initiative under the national Maternal Mortality Implementation Initiative (MAMII).

Held at the Hillside Royal Suites, Gidan Dawa, the training brought together key players from across the health sector — including state officials, medical experts, civil society groups, and international partners — to strategize on reducing preventable deaths during childbirth.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Omoruyi Iyahen, representing Federal Commissioner Dr. Muntaka Sadiq Umar, said, “This is more than a policy. It’s a life-saving call to action — and Katsina, with 15 high-risk LGAs, is at the heart of this effort.”

MAMII is expected to boost emergency healthcare access, reduce cost barriers, and empower communities to support pregnant women through improved surveillance systems and better-equipped facilities.

Health Commissioner Dr. Musa Adamu Funtua assured participants that the government is committed to equipping health centers with skilled personnel and modern tools, while the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Zulaihat Radda, vowed to lead awareness campaigns across the state.

Commending Governor Dikko Umar Radda’s leadership, Iyahen noted that “Katsina has what it takes to set the pace for the rest of the country. With focused implementation, we expect game-changing results by 2026.”

As part of the national healthcare reform launched in 2023, Katsina’s adoption of MAMII positions it as a potential model for maternal and child health progress in Nigeria.
