Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reassured his administration’s commitment toward upholding sports activities across the state, with a focus on engaging indigenous youth in various sporting disciplines.
Speaking while hosting the Torch of Unity delegation from the National Sports Commission ahead of the National Sports Festival tagged “Gateway Games Ogun 2025,” Governor Radda outlined his administration’s achievements in sports development.
“Since we came on board, our administration has established the Katsina Football Academy that engages and trains youths who have excelled and secured contracts with foreign teams,” Governor Radda stated.
The Governor further revealed that “Following this development, some indigenes of Katsina were selected to join the under-twenty team for trials.”
Governor Radda, however, assured the delegation that “The state will key into the festival and hopes to excel.”
Earlier in her remarks, the Team Lead Mrs. Bora Ikana explained that they were “mandated to take the unity torch round the twenty-six states of the federation and Abuja ahead of the National Sports Festival slated for Abeokuta from the sixteenth to thirtieth of May this year.”
Mrs. Ikana noted that “Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had flagged off the National Sports Festival on the twenty-fifth of March this year,” marking the official commencement of activities leading to the main event.
Speaking on the significance of the torch, she emphasized that “The unity torch signifies unity and peace,” adding that “sports had been identified as the best platform for peace as it engages youths and harnesses their talents among other steps to curtail their restiveness.”
The team lead also informed the Governor that they had “already covered North Central before moving to the North West” in their torch relay journey across the country.
Subsequently, the Governor, joined by the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Aliyu Lawal Shargalle, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Nasir Mamman Nasir, and the State Head of Service, Alhaji Falalu Bawale lighted the unity torch which signifies Katsina state participation.
The Gateway Games will feature various sports including football, volleyball, and basketball with athletes from different states showing their talents.
