GOMBE – Tension flared near the Gombe Correctional Centre late Wednesday night, April 9, 2025, when a confrontation between security officers and suspected hoodlums ended in gunfire, leaving one man injured.
According to intelligence sources, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. when a group of unidentified individuals attempted to force their way through a barricade set up by the Correctional Arms Squad. The suspects reportedly refused to halt at the checkpoint and began pelting stones at the officers.
In the ensuing chaos, a correctional officer discharged his weapon, striking 30-year-old Adamu Ahmed Bello of Jankai Quarters, Gombe, in the shoulder. Bello was quickly transported to the Federal Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Security reinforcements were swiftly deployed to the area, and the situation was brought under control. Police authorities confirmed that a full investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the breach and assess whether further charges will be filed.
Residents near the correctional centre reported hearing gunshots and witnessing increased security presence through the night, raising concerns about safety and potential escalation.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
