Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he has no regrets about not selecting Nyesom Wike as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, revealed that his choice of running mate followed due process. He recalled that after securing the PDP ticket in 2019, he consulted former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who suggested Peter Obi. The party leadership had no objections, although some members felt he had not consulted widely enough.
To avoid similar concerns in 2023, Atiku said he allowed the party to form a committee to recommend three candidates. “I picked the first name on the list,” he stated, making it clear that Wike, the then-Rivers State Governor, was not his choice.
Atiku’s remarks reaffirm his position amid lingering tensions within the PDP, as Wike later aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and became the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
