Four-time presidential candidate and fierce opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, arrived in court on a wheelchair on Wednesday as he faced formal treason charges in a dramatic turn of events. Prosecutors allege that between 2023 and November 2024, Besigye held meetings in Switzerland, Greece, and Kenya to solicit military and financial support for the overthrow of President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

The courtroom was tense as state lawyers laid out their case, claiming the veteran politician conspired with foreign entities to destabilize Uganda. Besigye, a longtime critic of Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule, has yet to enter a plea, but his legal team has dismissed the charges as politically motivated.

His frail appearance in a wheelchair sparked concerns over his health, with supporters calling for his immediate release. The case has reignited political tensions in Uganda, where crackdowns on opposition figures have intensified in recent years.

As the trial unfolds, all eyes remain on the judiciary, with the world watching how Uganda handles yet another high-profile political showdown.
