The Katsina State Elders Forum has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), who remains in detention.
Speaking at a press briefing in Katsina, the forum’s Secretary, Aliyu Sani Muhammad, questioned the rationale behind Yusuf’s arrest, insisting he had only exercised his constitutional right to free speech. He also urged President Bola Tinubu to clarify if democracy in Nigeria is taking a different turn.
Describing Yusuf as a globally recognized medical expert who left a lucrative career abroad to serve Nigeria, Muhammad alleged that political forces were behind his ordeal due to his outspoken nature. He further accused the government of double standards, pointing to allegations of nepotism in high-profile contracts.
The forum reminded President Tinubu that the North played a crucial role in his electoral victory and warned against actions that could alienate the region. Acting Chairman, Senator Mamman Abubakar Danmusa, cautioned that Yusuf’s continued detention could have serious political consequences.
The elders reaffirmed their commitment to justice, urging the government to respect the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of political stance.
