The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate an alleged N480 million bribery scheme involving Nigerian lawmakers and university vice-chancellors.
HEDA raised concerns over reports that some legislators demanded financial inducements from vice-chancellors in exchange for favorable budgetary allocations. The anti-corruption watchdog described the allegations as a serious threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s education and governance systems.
In a statement, HEDA Chairman Olanrewaju Suraju called for a thorough probe to uncover the truth, warning that any attempts to undermine the education sector through corrupt practices must be met with swift legal action.
The EFCC and ICPC have yet to officially respond to the call for an investigation. However, the development has sparked widespread reactions, with stakeholders demanding transparency and accountability in the allocation of funds to Nigerian universities.
