The Governors of the Lake Chad Basin, comprising Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, have unanimously elected Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, as the new Chairman of the Governors’ Forum. The election took place during the forum’s high-level meeting, where regional leaders convened to discuss pressing issues affecting the Lake Chad region.

Governor Buni’s emergence as Chairman marks a significant step in strengthening regional cooperation among the four nations, particularly in addressing security challenges, economic development, and climate change mitigation. His leadership is expected to drive coordinated efforts aimed at tackling the socio-economic and humanitarian crises affecting millions of people in the region.

A Vision for Regional Stability

In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work closely with his counterparts to foster peace and development. He emphasized the need for enhanced security collaboration, sustainable economic initiatives, and joint interventions to combat environmental degradation affecting the Lake Chad Basin.

“The Lake Chad Basin faces critical challenges, ranging from security threats posed by insurgency to the devastating impact of climate change on livelihoods. As Chairman, I am committed to fostering stronger partnerships among member states to ensure lasting peace, stability, and prosperity for our people,” Buni stated.

The Lake Chad Basin has been a hotspot for insecurity, with terrorist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP causing instability in the region. The humanitarian crisis, characterized by displacement, food insecurity, and dwindling water resources, has further complicated efforts to restore normalcy. Governor Buni’s leadership is expected to strengthen coordinated responses to these challenges, leveraging diplomatic ties and international support.

Collaboration for Progress

The Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum was established to enhance regional cooperation, particularly in security, governance, economic development, and environmental sustainability. With Governor Buni at the helm, the forum is expected to prioritize initiatives that promote cross-border trade, infrastructural development, and sustainable agriculture to improve the living conditions of the region’s inhabitants.

Member states have pledged their support to Buni’s leadership, recognizing his track record in governance and commitment to development. The Nigerien delegation lauded his efforts in fostering intergovernmental relations, while representatives from Cameroon and Chad expressed optimism that his tenure would yield tangible results.

Path to a Resilient Future

Governor Buni’s chairmanship comes at a time when international organizations and donor agencies are looking to support local initiatives aimed at restoring stability in the region. Experts believe that his leadership could play a pivotal role in securing more funding and technical support to implement long-term solutions.

The new Chairman has already outlined a strategic plan focusing on security, economic empowerment, and climate adaptation. He emphasized the need for a unified approach to tackling terrorism, promoting education, and boosting agricultural productivity as key drivers of sustainable development.

As Governor Buni assumes the leadership of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, stakeholders remain hopeful that his administration will usher in a new era of collaboration and progress, ensuring that the region overcomes its challenges and thrives once again.
