Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has called on Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to reconsider their decision to exit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasizing that unity is key to regional security and development.
Speaking at the 5th Lake Chad Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, Gen. Musa stressed the importance of maintaining regional cooperation despite the countries’ planned withdrawal by January 29.
“We urge our brothers in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to remain part of ECOWAS. Our strength lies in unity, and we must not allow political differences to divide us,” he said.
He warned that exiting ECOWAS could weaken collaborative efforts against terrorism, insurgency, and climate-related crises in the Lake Chad Basin. He highlighted the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) as a critical force in tackling cross-border security threats, urging continued support for its operations.
Gen. Musa further acknowledged the sacrifices made by security forces in restoring stability and called for a balanced approach—both military and diplomatic—to ensure lasting peace.
The week-long forum, which gathers regional leaders and stakeholders, focuses on security, the return of displaced persons, and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Basin.
