MAAUN Students Touching Lives in Africa
The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria and Maryam Abacha American University of Niger have seen their students establish and fund foundations that are touching the lives of people across Africa.
These initiatives reflect the students’ commitment to contributing to society and emulating the founder of the universities, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, and his foundation—the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundation (AAG- Foundation)—known for its impactful initiatives supporting the poor and vulnerable population.
The founder has welcomed these ideas and encouraged the students to be dedicated, hardworking, and innovative in creating programs that can touch lives.
Among the activities implemented by the students’ include Celebrating International Cancer Week in collaboration with other partners by creating awareness about breast cancer in Nigeria., visiting primary and secondary schools with donation of writing materials to school children in Nigeria and Niger and visits to a children’s orphanage school and donating food, drinks, and sweaters (harmattan) in Maradi, Niger Republic.
The students are determined to ensure they contribute to the development of their immediate community and beyond.
Transforming Education: Support for Schools
MAAUN students are actively involved in improving access to quality education by supporting schools in underserved communities. They provide essential learning materials such as books, stationery, and other writing tools, enabling students to learn in conducive environments. Understanding the scourge of hunger and malnutrition in society, MAAUN students have launched food distribution initiatives targeting the most vulnerable groups. The students also participated in vulnerable health insurance enrollment in Kano State to witness and learn the localization of international frameworks like Universal Health Coverage to vulnerable health insurance scheme in Kano State.

Access to clean and affordable water remains a challenge in many communities. MAAUN students have tackled this issue by supporting projects in some communities that provide sustainable water solutions.
From building and advocating for boreholes construction, to advocating for better water management policies, their efforts have brought relief to countless families, reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases and improving overall health outcomes.
Leadership and Skills Development Workshops
In line with MAAUN’s mission to produce future leaders, students organize workshops focused on leadership and skills development. These programs target youth and young adults, equipping them with essential skills for personal and professional growth.
Topics range from entrepreneurship and financial literacy to digital skills and ethical leadership, ensuring participants are well-prepared for the demands of the modern world.
The sophomore students organized and invited a Guest Speaker from UK Alhaji Sanusi Marafa.
