Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of sharing a misleading viral video with national security implications.
The video, which suggested plans to establish a French military base in Nigeria’s North-West, was reportedly outdated but gained significant traction online before Shehu deleted it. DSS operatives detained him over the weekend in Kaduna, with sources indicating that he may face arraignment soon.
Shehu’s arrest has reignited discussions about his controversial past, including prior accusations of attempted extortion. His legal team claims the current detention is politically motivated, tied to his vocal criticism of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
While authorities assure that Shehu’s rights will be upheld, the incident has sparked debate about the boundaries of activism and the responsibility of public figures in curbing misinformation.
