In a significant boost to Borno State’s infrastructure and urban renewal efforts, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has unveiled seven transformative projects, including housing estates, schools, and road networks, aimed at fostering development and improving the quality of life for residents.
The commissioning ceremonies, held over two days, saw the participation of notable dignitaries, including Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni and Nigeria’s World Bank representative, Dr. Ndiame Diop.
The projects are part of Governor Zulum’s commitment to rebuilding Borno in the aftermath of over a decade-long insurgency and the devastating Maiduguri flood disaster of 2024.
On Tuesday, Dr. Ndiame Diop commissioned three state-of-the-art schools in Jere Local Government Area.
The schools include the 60-classroom Government Day Secondary School, Mairi; the 40-classroom Government Day Secondary School, Gala-Mairi in Muna; and the 20-classroom Government Girls Junior Day Secondary School, Molai.
These institutions are expected to enhance educational access for thousands of students, with modern facilities and a conducive learning environment.
Highlighting the role of education in rebuilding the state, Dr. Diop praised the Zulum administration for its dedication to improving human capital development.
“These schools symbolize hope and resilience for Borno’s youth, ensuring they have the tools to build a brighter future,” he said.
On Wednesday, Governor Mai Mala Buni inaugurated critical infrastructure projects, including the Borno Express flyover and the 1.2-kilometer Shehu Garbai dual carriageway along Lawan Bukar Road in Maiduguri.
These projects aim to ease traffic congestion, stimulate economic activities, and improve connectivity within the state capital.
Governor Buni also unveiled two housing estates. One estate, named after Vice President Kashim Shettima, features 72 units of three-bedroom flats in a two-story building, offering modern housing solutions to middle-income families.
The second estate, comprising 500 houses, is named after Governor Mai Mala Buni himself, in recognition of his contributions to regional development and collaboration with the Zulum administration.
Speaking during the unveiling, Governor Buni commended Zulum’s visionary leadership and resilience. “These projects are a testament to the determination of the people of Borno to rise above challenges and rebuild stronger communities,” he stated.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to all partners, including the World Bank, for their support in bringing these projects to fruition. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to urban renewal, economic revitalization, and providing basic amenities for citizens.
“These projects are not just structures; they are symbols of hope and progress,” Zulum remarked. “We are dedicated to transforming Borno into a model of resilience and development.”
Residents of the state have lauded the new developments, describing them as life-changing. Maryam Abubakar, a resident of Mairi, said, “The new schools will provide opportunities for our children to learn in a safe and modern environment, while the roads and housing estates are transforming our neighborhoods.”
The commissioning of these projects marks another milestone in Governor Zulum’s ambitious agenda to rebuild Borno and restore normalcy to a state that has endured years of hardship.
