Calls for Deeper Cooperation, Touts Strong Bilateral Ties

Vice President Kashim Shettima has hailed the flourishing trade relations between Nigeria and China, revealing that the $22.6 billion trade volume in 2023 ranks as the highest in Africa.

He made this remark during a meeting with a Chinese delegation led by Mr. Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

Shettima highlighted the steady annual growth of 33% in trade between the two nations, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to fostering stronger ties. “Nigeria and China have enjoyed warm bilateral relations for 53 years, and this friendship continues to thrive,” he stated. He also expressed gratitude for China’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic and technological growth while urging further collaboration in security and economic diversification.

In his response, Mr. Zhang Qingwei reiterated China’s commitment to elevating Nigeria-China relations to new heights, referencing the recent visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinibu to China and the announcement of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The meeting underscored mutual support on political and developmental goals, marking a new chapter in the nations’ five-decade-long relationship.
