Nigeria’s internal security faces a severe breach as over 40 mobile policemen and soldiers have been arrested for allegedly selling arms and ammunition to terrorists. This shocking trend, uncovered during discreet investigations by intelligence agencies and the Theatre Command North East Operation Hadin Kai, has sent shockwaves across the nation.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu had earlier condemned the betrayal of security personnel engaging in these illicit activities. “The worst human being is a policeman or soldier who sells arms to bad people, enabling them to kill fellow citizens,” he stated during an Abuja event.
Investigations revealed that rogue personnel amassed significant wealth, with some holding up to ₦80 million from illegal arms sales. Weapons like AK-47 rifles were reportedly sold for ₦500,000–₦750,000, while heavier arms fetched over ₦1 million.
This disturbing trend has fueled insecurity in the North-East, North-West, North-Central, and South-East regions, with deadly attacks escalating due to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Security experts are urging the Defence Headquarters and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons to intensify efforts in dismantling these networks and halting the alarming arms trade within Nigeria’s security ranks.
