In a robust move to uplift the education sector, the Yobe State Government is addressing critical challenges in basic and secondary education, according to Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Wali made these remarks during an inspection tour of educational projects across the state, led by members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Alhaji Wali outlined the state’s comprehensive approach to educational reform, which focuses on accessibility, infrastructure, and improved learning conditions. He highlighted several initiatives that have been implemented since 2019, signaling the government’s strong commitment to educational transformation.
Expansion of School Infrastructure
To tackle overcrowding in urban schools, the government has constructed additional classrooms and model schools, providing relief to overpopulated institutions. These model schools are designed to offer conducive environments for learning, allowing students more space and resources to focus on their studies.
Recognizing the need for improved primary school enrollment in rural areas, the government partnered with traditional rulers to encourage school attendance. This collaboration aims to ensure that even children in remote areas can access quality education.
Support for Examination Fees and Girls’ Education
The state government has taken over the payment of West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) fees for students across the state. This measure is intended to ease the financial burden on families and encourage students to complete their secondary education without financial constraints.
In addition, the government has established more day secondary schools for girls in locations like Nguru, Gashua, Potiskum, and Damaturu. This expansion allows young women to pursue their academic aspirations closer to home, fostering gender equality in education across the state.
Ongoing Rehabilitation and Infrastructure Upgrades
School rehabilitation is ongoing across Yobe, with upgrades including the provision of furniture and repairs to existing facilities. The government has made it a priority to enhance school infrastructure, creating environments where students and teachers feel supported.
One of the significant investments is in school feeding, with around N500 million allocated monthly to ensure senior secondary students have access to meals. Additionally, plans are underway to equip all secondary schools with solar power by 2025, aiming to create reliable electricity sources and promote sustainable energy use in schools.
Praise from Educational Leaders
Principals and teachers in Yobe have praised Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration for its focus on education. Malam Musa Bulama, Principal of Government Day Secondary School in Gashua, commended the governor for infrastructure improvements, including classroom and laboratory renovations. Similarly, Mr. Hasibullahi Jogi, Principal of NTIC Yobe Campus, lauded the government’s support, noting that recent Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results have improved significantly, with some students scoring over 300 points.
Hajiya Ladi Ishaku Gali, Principal of Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu, also expressed appreciation, citing newly renovated classrooms and hostel facilities that have transformed the learning environment.
NUJ’s Call for Professional Reporting
During the tour, Comrade Rajab Muhammed Ismail, NUJ Chairman, urged journalists to maintain professionalism, encouraging them to set aside political and religious biases in their reporting. He emphasized the importance of fair and accurate reporting to support national unity and development.
The Yobe State Government’s focus on education reform, infrastructure improvements, and accessible learning opportunities has created optimism among students, teachers, and parents. The administration’s continued efforts reflect a long-term vision for educational excellence and social progress in Yobe State.
