The 8 Division Nigerian Army on Thursday rolled out the drums in Sokoto as it hosted a colourful send-forth ceremony in honour of its outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose, lauded for decisive leadership, strategic foresight and a morale-boosting tenure.
The ceremony, held at the Eagle Officers’ Mess, Giginya Barracks, brought together officers, men and dignitaries to celebrate Major General Ajose’s service as GOC 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
In an emotional farewell address, Major General Ajose described his appointment as the 10th GOC of the Division as one of the highest honours of his military career. He praised officers and soldiers for their loyalty, professionalism and resilience, noting that the Division remained steadfast in the face of daunting operational challenges.
“Together, we confronted adversity, upheld our mandate and served our nation with courage and integrity,” he said, urging troops to remain united and committed to the ideals and traditions of the Nigerian Army. He expressed confidence in the Division’s leadership and fighting spirit as he handed over command.
Earlier, the Commander, 8 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Abdulmalik Mohammed, described the outgoing GOC as a mentor, father figure and transformational leader whose proactive style redefined command within the Division. He recalled that since assuming duty in July 2024, Major General Ajose anticipated threats, repositioned forces and ensured operational readiness across the theatre.
“His leadership was not reactive but powerfully proactive,” Mohammed said, adding that Ajose’s legacy would endure beyond infrastructure upgrades to inspire future generations of soldiers.
The event attracted top security stakeholders, including the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Sokoto State Government, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State, and the Director of the Department of State Services in the state, alongside members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto Branch.
Cultural dance displays reflecting the rich heritage of the North-West, a grand dinner, presentation of certificates and souvenirs, and group photographs crowned the ceremony, sealing a night of camaraderie and military tradition.
