The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has scored another major security breakthrough with the recovery of 415 live cartridges, the arrest of the suspected owner of the ammunition, and the detention of two commuters accused of obstructing lawful police duties.
The haul was made late on January 23, 2026, when operatives on routine stop-and-search patrol along the Calabar–Itu Highway intercepted a commercial bus (registration ARR600ZY) heading to Calabar. A meticulous search of the vehicle uncovered a carton packed with live cartridges.
The driver, identified as Ikenna, told officers the ammunition was not his, claiming it was a waybill consignment meant for an unnamed recipient in Calabar.
Tension flared during the operation when a commuter, popularly known as “Excel,” allegedly attempted to disrupt the search with provocative conduct. Another passenger, Bright—who claimed affiliation with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission but failed to present valid identification—was also accused of joining in the assault on officers. Both were promptly arrested.
Following intelligence-led investigations, police later apprehended Ndubisi Raphael (36), an indigene of Nyaje village in Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State, in Calabar. He is believed to be linked to the recovered ammunition and is currently in custody.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, ordered a discreet and comprehensive probe to trace the source and intended use of the cartridges, assuring that all those found culpable will be prosecuted.
The Command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against illegal arms proliferation and warned the public against obstructing officers in the lawful execution of their duties, pledging continued commitment to peace, public safety, and security across Akwa Ibom State.
