In a bold pre-election move, Dauda Lawal has directed all political appointees and council members aspiring to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Gusau, signaling a firm stance on compliance with electoral regulations ahead of the upcoming polls.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the order aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 elections.
The statement revealed that the governor has mandated the Secretary to the State Government to circulate the directive to all political appointees, while the Head of Service is to ensure that civil servants with political ambitions also comply within the stipulated timeframe.
“In his opening remarks, the governor directed that all council members vying for political offices should resign on or before March 31, 2026,” the statement noted, emphasizing the administration’s insistence on due process and transparency.
Observers say the move is aimed at preventing conflicts of interest and ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants, while also reinforcing discipline within government ranks.
