Former Sokoto State governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has declared that the emerging opposition alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is focused on rebuilding national confidence and restoring democratic balance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Sokoto on Friday after attending a special prayer marking his 60th birthday anniversary, Tambuwal said the coalition’s mission goes beyond simply dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“What we are doing is about beginning again,” Tambuwal said. “We are rebuilding confidence between leaders and citizens and reconnecting politics to national progress.”
A key figure in the ongoing coalition talks, Tambuwal stressed that the movement is anchored on unity, equity, and development, warning that politics driven by fear and self-preservation undermines democracy.
“Running to the centre out of fear or for protection is not democracy,” he said. “Defections should be based on belief and vision, not political panic.”
The former governor argued that the growing wave of defections into the ruling party reflects anxiety rather than conviction, adding that public discontent is becoming increasingly visible nationwide.
“If the movement is insignificant, why the intimidation, cajoling and pressure on governors?” he asked.
Tambuwal maintained that the 2027 elections must reflect the true will of the people, vowing that any attempt to manipulate outcomes would be challenged through lawful and constitutional means.
Political analysts say the widening coalition — bringing together opposition parties, blocs and influential political actors — could redraw Nigeria’s electoral map, posing the most serious test to APC dominance since 2015.
Describing the talks as ongoing, Tambuwal said a broad-based platform capable of challenging the status quo will emerge in due course.
“It’s a work in progress. When the time is right, a collective position will emerge,” he said.
With party realignments, defections and legal battles intensifying ahead of the next election cycle, the ADC-led coalition is shaping up to be a major force in what could become one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested elections since the return to civil rule in 1999.
