2022 Global Cooperative Day: DRPC, PAWED, Others Hold National Symposium

As a deliberate strategy to mark the 2022 United Nations Global Cooperative day in Nigeria, the Development Research and projects Center (DRPC) in collaboration with the Partnership for Advancing Women Economic Development ( PAWED) , National Cooperative Financing Agency ( CFAN) funded By Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation( BMGF) have organised National Symposium .
The theme of this year’s celebration is ” Cooperatives Help Build a Better World ” .
In his welcomed address, the Executive Secretary National Cooperatives Financing Agency (CFAN) , Mr. Emmanuel Atama said that the national symposium was part this year’s activities for women in cooperatives by National Cooperative Financing Agency to mark the day.

According to him, the symposium would be a turning point in the annals of women cooperative movement in Nigeria, adding that it would promote the resilient and economically consciousness among women in cooperatives.
He said that it would also afford them the opportunity to discuss with policy markers, organised private sector and development partners on emerging issues on the part of building the capacity of women.
He said that the symposium would also contribute to national development, stressing that the modern realities especially as it concerns women and youth in view of the the sustainable and self – help opportunities that abound cooperatives.
He thanked the DRPC, Bill and Millinda Gates foundation for the sponsorship under Partnership for Advancing Women Development for organising the symposium and commended them for contributing to skill development and ensuring protection of women rights and gender equality.
In her goodwill message, the Minister of Women Affairs represented by Mrs. Folashed Atunike said that cooperative was important organisation that provides social environment for women to secure low cost credit supplies, farming equipment and actively participate in social activities.
“She said that Federal Ministry of Women Affairs had the mandate for economic empowerment of women , children and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria.
” She added that the Ministry would also provide the strategic framework for impaful development and capacity building for and girls in enterprenuship through her various schemes such as Business and Development Fund for Women ( BUDFOW) .
” She appealed to the various stakeholders and cooperatives to partner with Ministry to enable more women benefit from various government intervention in order to help their communities “.
In a goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Labour and Employment, who was represented by Mrs. Juliet Nwadi said that cooperative was designed to eliminate poverty and create employment as well as bulding capacity and empowerment for women.
“She added that the Ministry had several programmes and activities to support cooperative members to be more knowledgeable on cooperative education, skill development and empowerment.
The President Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) , Sameera Abubakar Abdullahi said that for women cooperative played a vital role in the in social economic development of every nation and increase standard of living of the rural women at the various communities.
For her part, the President Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture AWITA, Ruth Agbo said that Cooperative provided women with access to capital for their businesses through regular savings, especially the rural anlow-income women in agriculture and women in trade for a better quality of life.
