Katsina state government

Babanla town in Kwara State descended into chaos on Friday afternoon when about 200 armed bandits on motorbikes launched a brazen assault, killing a police officer and looting the local market.

The attack, which began around 1:00 p.m., saw the assailants storm the Babanla Police Station, firing sporadically. ASP Adejumo Wasiu, attached to the ACPOL Offa, was fatally shot in the confrontation, and his AK-47 rifle seized by the attackers. The station was ransacked, though no other weapons were taken, as they had been secured on charge.

After the deadly strike on the police facility, the gang moved to the town’s market, carting away large quantities of foodstuffs amid panic and confusion.

A swift joint response by the military, police, vigilantes, and local hunters forced the attackers to retreat, restoring calm to the embattled community. The number of civilian casualties remains unclear at press time.
