At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following violent clashes between bandits and illegal miners in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to reports, the bloody confrontation erupted after a group of miners killed a notorious bandit leader who had allegedly demanded a share of gold proceeds at gunpoint. His death reportedly triggered a reprisal attack by his gang members, leading to the killing of several miners and residents.
According to a report by Channels Television, seven miners were initially killed at the mining site before the bandits launched a second attack on the nearby Layin Danauta village, where nine residents were killed, several others injured, and properties destroyed.
Security sources confirmed that the violence was fueled by competition for control over gold deposits in the area. The Kaduna State Police Command also acknowledged the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
The Birnin Gwari axis, known for its rich mineral deposits, has long been a hotspot for criminal activities, including illegal mining and banditry. The recent violence comes months after a fragile peace deal between local communities and armed groups was brokered in late 2024, raising fears of renewed instability.
Experts have warned that as bandit groups lose income from kidnappings due to increased security presence, many are turning to illegal mining as an alternative source of revenue, intensifying conflicts with miners and residents.
Meanwhile, security patrols have been reinforced in the affected communities as authorities work to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed.
