Tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday when a fatal lone crash claimed 12 lives at Samawa Village in Garun Malam Local Government Area, along the Zaria–Kano highway.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command, the accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. and involved a DAF Trailer CF95 (registration number KMC 931 ZE) loaded with goods, including Ajinomoto spices, and passengers.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a mechanical fault caused the trailer’s cab hook to break, detaching it from the trailer body and resulting in loss of control. Out of the 19 people on board, 12 died instantly, five sustained injuries, and two escaped unhurt.
The injured were rushed to Kura General Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Nassarawa Hospital.
Sector Commander CC MB Bature, who visited the scene, described the loss as “avoidable,” stressing that overloading passengers, goods, and animals in the same vehicle poses deadly risks. He warned drivers to strictly follow traffic regulations or face stiff sanctions.
The Corps extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
