Police in Limpopo, South Africa, are investigating a tragic incident in which an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a farm worker in the Thabazimbi area of Polokwane.
According to a statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the boy had allegedly been shooting at guinea fowls on a local farm when he mistakenly struck a 33-year-old farm worker. The victim was found with a gunshot wound to the upper left chest and was pronounced dead by emergency responders at the scene.
Following the incident, police arrested the boy’s 43-year-old father for negligent handling of a firearm. Investigators confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting, along with a spent cartridge, had been seized as evidence.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, described the incident as a “tragic reminder” of the dangers of leaving firearms within reach of children. She urged gun owners to ensure that all weapons are safely secured and handled responsibly at all times.
Both the boy and his father are expected to appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court as investigations continue.
The case has drawn public attention in South Africa, reigniting calls for stricter firearm storage regulations and increased parental responsibility in gun ownership.
